MADURAI: the first regulated market for paddy was inaugurated in Madurai on 20th Nov 2015, almost three
decades after regulated markets under the agricultural marketing committee were introduced in Tamil Nadu.
The regulated market was inaugurated at the Mattuthavani Agriculture Market Complex here. On the first day three
farmers kept their produce for auction, and rice mill owners who bid the highest price acquired them.
They had received an additional Rs 100 to Rs 150 per bag as compared to prices fixed by commission agents, said
farmers.
Another regulated market will be inaugurated at Vadipatti on 23rd Nov 2015. Officials are also planning to open
the markets at Usilampatti and Tirumangalam in due course of time. The fifth market will come up in Melur where
they have purchased land for establishing market.
