Maharashtra State plans insurance cover for farmersHome

Amravati: For protecting the farmers of the Maharashtra, State Government is going to launch a scheme that aims at bringing 1.35 crore farmers of the state under insurance cover.

At the inaugural function of the 4-day National Agriculture and Orange Festival at Warud this announcement during his presidential speech, state agriculture and revenue minister Eknath Khadse said that the state government would take care of the insurance premium of the farmers.

Under this insurance cover,If a farmer meets death for any reason his family will get Rs2 lakh and lifelong security will thus be granted to the farmers under life insurance scheme.

Khadse said that the state government would implement the scheme in stages. Also he said that farmers needed to be encouraged and the government is doing that. He urged the farmers to come out of the suicidal mindset. "We are ready to help you financially, Farmer committing suicide is not only a painful thing but also a curse on the government."

Urging farmers to take to drip irrigation, Khadse said that as a special case, Farmers from Amravati would be given 75% subsidy for drips while the government will direct banks to provide remaining 25% as loan to them so that they don't have to shell out anything from their pockets.
