Loan Waiver Certificates to the Farmers.

Trichy: The cooperative societies department distributing loan waiver certificates to 50 farmers indebted to primary agriculture cooperative credit society (PACCS) in Somarasampettai, so a long standing demand of waiver of loans by small and marginal farmers in Trichy turned into a reality.

The certificates are given by State minister for tourism Vellamandi N Natarajan and minister for backward and minorities' welfare S Valarmathi to the farmers.

To fulfil one of her electoral promises, chief minister J Jayalalithaa had ordered waiving off crop loans to the tune of Rs 5,780 crore, on assuming office for the second consecutive term on May 23.

While talking about Trichy district, the waiver will benefit 63,974 small and marginal farmers get rid of the debt of Rs 278.81 crore from 147 cooperative banks. The preparation of the list of beneficiaries based on the guidelines given by the state government is being prepare by the cooperative societies department.

"It could be the final list of beneficiaries. The audit may find out some more beneficiaries. From today, we have started distributing the loan waiver certificates. The listed beneficiaries can collect their certificates from the respective banks," said K C Ravichandran, Regional joint registrar (JR) of cooperatives.

As agriculture loans taken from the nationalized banks was not included in the waiver, a large section of farmers have been left fuming.

State spokesperson of Bharatiya Kisan Sangam N Veerasekaran in Trichy, said "The guidelines for choosing the small and marginal farmers are not fair. The guidelines classify both the farmers owning lands above five acres and those having above five acres of land on lease as big farmers. Those who cultivate on leased land should be considered as small and marginal farmers."
