Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has advised farmers to sell cotton upon harvestHome

'Sell cotton upon harvest' is the suggestion for farmers by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. They said sell cotton without trying to hold stock as prices of long staple summer cotton will rule around Rs 4,100 to Rs 4,300 per quintal.

Freshly harvested cotton in Konganapuram regulated market in Tamil Nadu now fetches around Rs 3,500 to 4,000 per quintal mainly due to arrivals of poor quality moist fibers from the surrounding areas, an analysis by TNAU's Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre said.

The centre analysed the price behaviour in Konganapuram market for the last 18 years and also conducted traders survey, to give price forecast to the farmers. The results indicated that price of long staple summer cotton on harvest would be around Rs 4,100 to 4,300 per quintal, based on which farmers were advised to sell their quality cotton immediately.

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have two third of total cotton production in India, while Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are major states contributing with 30% of national cotton production, the Centre said.
