Wheat Acquisition is Greater than Last Year's LevelHome

Wheat procurement begins from April. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) had set the wheat procurement target of 30 million tonnes for this season. The government's wheat procurement in the 2015-16 marketing season has greater than last year's level which is 28 million tonnes.

The Food Ministry said in release that "Wheat procurement by government agencies during current marketing season has crossed the last year mark. As on July 13, a total of 28.08 million tonnes have been procured in various growing states." Also he said that "Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have contributed maximum to the government's central pool"

The FCI purchased 1.3 million tonnes in Rajasthan, 10,864 tonnes in Chandigarh, 4,085 tonnes in Uttarakhand and 1,73,135 tonnes in Gujarat, 2.26 million tonnes of wheat in Uttar Pradesh, 787 tonnes in Delhi in the said period.

The procurement has picked up pace after the government relaxed quality norms for purchase of the grain. More than 80 per cent of wheat has been procured based on relaxed norms.
