Farmers FIRST Project (FFP) Inauguration of Animal Husbandry Interventions

The animal husbandry interventions initiated in the FFP panchayath are ‘ Mastitis control programme for milch animals’ involving all the 300 farmers, ‘Hydroponics fodder units’ for seven farmers having more than 7 milch animals, ‘High yielding fodder varieties’ like CO 5, Desmanthus and Fodder maize from TNAU, Coimbatore.

The programmes are being organized with the active participation of the Government Veterinary Hospital of the panchayath and facilitated technically by Dr. G. Madhuri, Veterinary Surgeon.

The programmes were inaugurated by Sri. Sukumara Pillai, Vice Chairman, Onattukara Vikasana Samithi. He stressed the need for rejuvenating traditional crops and healthy food habits. The area was accredited with pulse crops like horsegram, sesamum, and animal husbandry farmers. The initiatives of FFP project for popularizing integrated farming systems (IFS) was lauded as an appropriate need based farm intervention.

The other units were inaugurated by handing over hydroponics tray, fodder slips and mastitis kit (reagent, povidone iodine, bleaching powder and potassium permanganate).

Under the FFP, the tissue culture hardening unit run by rural youth also was inaugurated handing over hardened plant to self help group for planting. Mr. V.Prabhakaran, President, Pathiyoor panchayath chaired the meeting. Dr. P. C. Sunilkumar, district Veterinary Officer, Alappuzha gave the technical talk and released extension folder on ‘Mastitis control’.

The programme was well attended by more than 300 farmers of the panchayath. The inaugural programme was followed with awareness session on disease control and scientific fodder cultivation by Dr. Beena, Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Muthukulam.
