Indian Government Providing an Infrastructure Support for Livestock

The Gross Value Added from Livestock sector at current price was about Rs.7,33,054 crore during 2014-15 which is about 28.7% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) from total Agriculture and allied sector at current prices and 27.8% at constant prices, says the estimates of the Central Statistics Office (CSO)

Then the Planning Commission approved an outlay of Rs 14,179 crore for the 12th Five Year Plan Period (i.e.2012-17) as against proposed plan outlay of Rs 25,639.24 crore.

To the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries, the Planning Commission had approved an outlay of Rs.8174 crore during 11th Five Year Plan period. The allocations for different sectors are decided keeping in view the competing demands and the total resources available with the Government.

Under state plan scheme of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) over and above the budgetary allocation of the Department, financial resources for the projects of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries sectors have also been made available.

There are 19 Institutes pertaining to animals, two Deemed Universities, Central Institutes, National Research Centers, Directorates and Species specific institutes are under Animal Science Division of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, which looks into the issues pertaining to the particular species like cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, Equine, poultry etc.

Veterinary Services including veterinary infrastructure and facilities for disease diagnosis, epidemiology, monitoring & surveillance for animal diseases are provided by respective State Governments. Through namely ‘Livestock Health and Disease Control (LH &DC)’ Scheme, Department supplements the efforts of State/UT Governments by providing financial assistance to develop adequate facilities and veterinary infrastructure for animal disease diagnosis, reporting, epidemiology, monitoring and early warning system of livestock diseases in the country.

In addition, breed improvement of small ruminants is being taken under National Livestock Mission. Department is implementing the sub-mission on Feed and Fodder Development under National Livestock Mission in order to enhance availability of feed and fodder.

For improvement of breed of bovine population in country, The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries is implementing following schemes:
- Rashtriya Goukul Mission (RGM) (part of NPBB)
- National Programme for Bovine Breeding (NPBB)
- National Dairy Plan-I
- Central Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute
- Central Cattle Breeding Farms
- Establishment of National Kamdhenu Breeding Centre
- Central Herd Registration Scheme
