Increase export of Seafood products

There are some positive changes in the direction of Indian seafood exports. There is a marked increase in the exports to the developed western markets like the US market and the EU market. Seafood exports from the country touched a record level of Rs.5,000 crore in 1999-2000. The increase in value was of the order of 10% while in terns of quantity was over 12%. Moreover, there is an increase in the export of some product categories like the value-added sea food products.

Value-wise there is an increase of 10% with the total seafood exports touching Rs. 5.096 crore. But in dollar terms the growth rate was only 7%.

The share of Japan in total exports declined from 50% in the previous year to 44% in 1999-2000. In short, European Union and US has emerged as the booming market for Indian seafood exporters, as reported.
