Pepper export may not reach the target
The export performance
of the first two-months indicates that black pepper exports may not reach the target
set by the Spices Board for the current year. Exports during April-May 2000 have declined
sharply to 4,000 tonnes valued at Rs. 85.60 crore from 10,897 tonnes worth Rs 204.18 crore
during the corresponding period of the last year. At this rate, pepper exports are not
likely to achieve the target of 38,500 tonnes valued at Rs. 822 crore sets by the Spices
Board for the current year, as reported.
It is worth noting
that the share of black pepper in total spice export last year touched 46 % as against 36%
in 1998-99. Based on the excellent performance last year, the Spices Board appears to have
set an ambitious target for pepper exports of Rs. 822 crore accounting for 41% of the
total target of Rs. 2,000 crore for the current year.
As against this,
exports during April-May 2000 have dropped to 4,000 tonnes valued at Rs.85,60 crore from
10,897 tonnes valued at Rs. 204.18 crore recorded in the corresponding period. In
1999-2000 pepper exports exceeded its target of 36,000 tonnes valued at Rs. 612.60 crore
and touched 42,100 tonnes valued at Rs.864.97 crore, as report release. |
