Raw imports : only hope for oil extraction units

The solvent extraction industry may show an increase in its capacity utilisation and revival of sick units if imports of oilcakes or oil-bearing materials become a regular feature, as sources said. According to the millers, about four-five vessels have been contracted from Indonesia, Philippine, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia, as oilcake such as copra expeller cake and palmkernel cakes will start arriving at Indian ports along with rice bran, since last week.

In an effort to explore new markets for Indian oilmeals, a delegation headed by the Solvent Extractors’ Association president visited Singapore, Jakarta, Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. The mission was aimed at achieving the objectives of revival of contacts with feed millers, importers/exporters of oilmeals as feed ingredients and promoting non-edible oilmeals like castor meal, neem extraction for use as natural fertilisers. The delegation also explored the possibility of importing oil cakes and rice bran for processing, as reported.

It is reported that organic farming has created good market for oilmeals for use as natural fertilisers and paying attention to this segment would help in enhancing the exports of oilmeals from India, particularly castormeal, neem extractions, rapeseed, linseed and other oil meals as natural fertilisers. There is also a lot of interest for import of neem extractions from India for using as natural fertilizer and as natural pesticides. Export of castor and other meals can double within the next two years itself, if full attention is paid to promote its use as natural fertilisers, as added.
