Release of 1 lakh tonnes of onion for export

The Commerce and Industry Ministry of Centre has decided to release, one lakh tonnes of onion for export during August, September and October. According to a decision taken the export quantity would be allocated to selected cenelising agencies.

It is reported that the decision follows representations from various farmers’ groups and associations of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Bihar among others about a glut from the rabi crop and storage available from earlier crops. An official release says the release of one lakh tonnes today is in addition to the 50,000 tonnes each in April and May. The quantity would have to be exported before October 31.
