Seafood exports increase in ‘99-00

Processed and preserved seafood products make a sharp increase in India’s seafood export for the year ‘99-00.It it reported that, Marine products Export Development Authority’s (MPEDA) efforts to increase India’s seafood exports through value added items have yielded results. The country’s seafood exports during ‘99-00 grew by 17 % to cross the Rs.5, 000 crore mark for the first time. According to the financial highlights released by MPEDA, the exports for the period ‘99-00 stood at nearly 5,114 crore, up from Rs. 4,368.5 crore last year. The impressive performance is chiefly due to an 83% growth in the value added items like processed and preserved marine food during the year.

The MPEDA report said, frozen shrimp was the major export item during the year as before, contributing 71% in value terms to the total marine foods export. Next to frozen shrimp, frozen fish with a 10% share in the total marine foods export was the second largest export item, followed by frozen cuttle and squid fish with a six percent share.
