Cashewnut export

Though there was a fall in the cashewnut production in the current year the world over, the Indian Cashewnut Industry was not affected because part of domestic supply was diverted to export market.

In 1999-2000 exports of cashew kernels have touched a record level. In quantity terms the exports stood at 93,000 tonnes and the value of exports has touched Rs 2,500 crore. In dollar terms the value stood at US $570 million. As against this, the exports in the previous year stood at 75,000 tonnes valued at Rs 1,610 crore. In dollar terms, the exports stood at US $ 280 million.

In other words, there was an increase of 24 per cent in quantity and 55 per cent in value of the exports in 1999-2000.

Raw nut production was 4.60 lakh tonnes in 1998-99. But according to the trade estimates the production was only 3 lakh tonnes in 1998-99. In the case of 1999-2000, the official estimate say that the production is 5.2 lakh tonnes whereas the trade estimates pegs the production at 3.7 lakh tonnes.
