Decline in Rapeseed production

India’s rapeseed production in 99-00 will decline due to the ongoing drought in the main growing regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat states. These two states account for 51 % of rapeseed production and have been experiencing dry conditions from late last year.

The ‘99-00 harvested area is estimated at 6.4 million hectares, down from the five-year average of 6.7 million, industry sources said. The reduced production is a result of the persistent dry conditions during the growing season.

On an average, Uttar Pradesh grows 16.9 % of India’s total repeseed production, Haryana 10.6 %, Madhya Pradesh 9.5 %, West Bengal 4.8%, Punjab 1.5 % and Assam 2.6 % as reported by Delhi market sources.
