Mangoes play hard to get

The mango crop has been disappointing this year and demand is said to be down in local markets due to high prices. In Maharashtra, a major producing centre, the yield is down by nearly 40% because of unseasonal rains in major producing areas like Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigadh districts. A dozen Aphonso still costs Rs 100-250 in state, while Badami is the cheapest, selling at Rs 10 per kg, Lalbaug is sought at Rs 120 per six kilogram and Gola costs Rs 70-100 per six kg.
