Export of meat and meat products

The major markets for our meat and meat products are Malaysia, UAE,Kuwait, Mauritius, Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia,Oman and Phillipines. There has been a steady growth in the export of meat and met products during the last ten years despite temporary/total ban imposed by some importing countries due to alleged unhygienic condition of Indian slaughter houses as also prevalence of Rinderpest/Food and Mouth Diseases in certain parts of India.

Buffalo meat is exported both in fresh and frozen forms, the sheep and goat meat is generally exported in fresh form. Beef (i.e.meatof cow and its progency) is banned for export.

During the peirod 1991-92 to 1997-98, exports have grown by 240% .However, there has been a decline of 6.4% in these exports during April-September ,98 as compared to the corresponding period of last year. From a level of Rs.392.62 crored in April-September 1997, these have fallen to the level of Rs.367.32 crores during period of current year mainly on account of substantial decline in exports to Malaysia and Phillipines who have been confronted with a serious financial crisis for quite sometime.

A number of steps have been taken to improve the quality of Indian meat such as specifying internationally acceptable standards for Raw meat (Chilled and Frozen) and Processed Meat Products as well as animal casings, upgrading of slaughter houses and increased efforts for control of animal disease.
