Grain production may not reach the expectations

Production of foodgrains is likely to be 201.56 million tonnes against the target of 210 million tonnes during the year 99-00.

The shortfall in the wheat production is likely to be four million tonnes and that of coarse cereals about five million tonnes. The shortfall in the production of pulses was over two million tonnes while the production of rice had exceeded its target by two million tonnes.

The shortfall in the production target is not going to lead to any food scarcity as country’s total annual requirement was 195 million tonnes.

Per capita availability of foodgrains during 99 was 470.1 gm per day compared to 509.3 gm per day in 97 and 450 gm in 98.
