Import duty on milk product

Indian dairy sector contributes the large share in agricultural gross domestic products. Indian dairy is considering the single largest rural employment programme. Presently there are around 70,000 village milk producers in all over India. The co-operative societies federated into 170 district milk producers unions, which is turn has 22 state cooperative dairy federation.

Presently Dairy sector of advanced nations exported milk products with a subsidy of $ 1000 per tonne with a level of subsidy more than 60 % of the price of milk powder produced in India. Hence it has urged the centre to immediately impose import duty on milk powder.

According to a report of the Union budget - the finance bill 2000–– has provided the imposition of 60 % import duty on skimmed and whole milk powder as reported by National dairy sector.
