Import of Vanaspati from Nepal

The Indian Vanaspati Producers Association (IVPA) state as the renewal of the treaty by the Indian government has seen a massive rise in imports of vanaspati from Nepal.

During the financial year `96-97,oil imports were placed at between 1,000 to 1,200 tonnes per month. However, during oil year ’98 –99, the imports were significantly higher and were believed to be around 8,000 tonnes per month. Most of the arrivals take place in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The vanaspati which arrives in these states apparently heads for other consumption centers. The decision taken by the Indian government to permit imports of curde edible oils at concessional rate is highly appreciable.

"Annual production of vanaspati is placed at around 1.10 m tonnes. The estimate indicates that imports of curde palm oil (CPO), which is a key raw material in the production of vanaspati, has risen after the Indian government amended that customs duty".
