Indian tea to be imported to Pak through third party

Due to worsening relations Pak and India, Indian tea exporters are contemplating to export tea to Pakistan through a third country. Indian tea exporters are switching to increase the exports to traditional markets in 2000.

India’s shipment of tea in 1999 fell sharply to 190 million kg from 210 kg exported in 1998. The Indian Tea Association has set an export target of 220 million kgs for the year 2000.

This is reported that the target for 2000 was achievable given the rapid strides made by India since 1995. The value of tea shipments from the country has gone up to 450-500 million dollars in 1999 from 300 million dollars in 1995.

On exports to European and Middle Eastern markets, both ITA and Tea Board has chalked out various measures to promote the commodity, including sending delegations to promote Indian tea there.

The association and Tea Board were working to achieve twin objectives of enhancing production to meet the domestic demand and increasing exports.

The three day India international millenium tea convention was also an initiative to increase the visibility of Indian tea among buyers, reported from Delhi market.
