Karanataka : Foodgrain target for 00-01

The State government has fixed an ambitious foodgrain production target of 100.08 lakh tonnes for 2000-2001 as against 98 lakh tonnes fixed for 1999-2000.

Official sources told that the area under foodgrain production in kharif, rabi and summers seasons was 73.25 lakh hectares here against 71.47 lakh hectares last year.

The major portion of the foodgrain production target was covered in the kharif season at 73.30 lakh tonnes. Of this, the lion’s share of 68.39 lakh tonnes was covered under cereals and 4.91 lakh tonnes under pulses production.

The foodgrain target for rabi season was fixed at 18.28 lakh tonnes covering an area of 24.45 lakh hectares. For the summer season, the foodgrain target was fixed at 8.49 lakh tonnes covering an area of 2.85 lakh hectares.

More than 35 per cent of the foodgrain output target is covered under seed production followed by maize, jowar and ragi. Of the 100.08 lakh 92.37 lakh tonne. The rest is through pulses. The anticipated combined production of rice in the current in all the three seasons is 35.11 lakh tonnes. The target fixed for maize is 18.83 lakh tonnes covering an area of 5.40 lakh hectares. The jowar Rs.17.54 lakh tonnes covering and area of 19.50 lakh hectares. Ragi, with an anticipated production of 16.60 lakh tonnes, is expected to be grown in 10 lakh hectares.
