Malaysia’s  Rice Imports

Malaysia’s rice improts will increase slightly in 2000, aided by the country’s economic growth and flat local production, industry sources said. Imports were expected to rise up to 700,000 tonnes this year compared with 650,000 in 1999. Imports stood at 593,000 tonnes in 1998 at the height of the economic slowdown in the country of 22 million people, the sources said. This year’s imports should increase to between 680,000 and 700,000.
