Mango moods spoilt this
summer
Looking
to the mango arrival in market, this year rough estimate of mango arrival is nearly 50% as
compared to last years arrivals. Usually, in peak period (April 15-May 15) about 300 to
400 trucks carrying mangoes arrived at Vashi APMC complex from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg
districts , which are famous for Alphanso and Payari brand.
Till
date, on an average 200 trucks are arriving at the Vashi APMC terminal, which is far below
the normal arrivals.
However,
alphanso remains the darling of the consumers. Good quality ranges between Rs 800 to Rs
1,000 for a crate containing four to six dozens, while the middle and low range cost Rs
700-800 and Rs 500-600 respectively. And at retail outlets, Rs 150-200 is added to the
wholesale price.
This
year mangoes arrived early in mid-February. Wholesale traders complain that whatever
mangoes came into the market before mid April were made ripe artificially and lacked taste
and flavour.
Mangoes
are exported mainly to Gulf countries. There is a great demand from Switzerland and
Germany,. Mango exporters are affected following wide fluctuation in prices,
compounded by lower crops.
Exports
this year are bound to be affected by two reason. First, production is less. Secondly,
Indias reputation is badly affected due to arrival of premature mangoes. If the
present export scenario is any indication, it would be difficult to achieve the target.
Exporters also have to comprise heavily on the profit margins. The situation will take
turn for the worse when they will hardly cover their costs, lament another exporter, as
reported by market sources.
In
the International market, both Pakistan and Kenya are trying to cash in this opportunity.
Hence the lower end market is affected, however, those who care for quality continue to
prefer Indian alphanso.
According
to him, currently the premium quality (A+) is quoted at Rs 275 per dozen in overseas
market, grade A at Rs 220, grade B at Rs 180 and grade C (smaller size) at Rs 100-105 per
dozen respectively. |
