Market Trends Of Black Pepper

THE prices of black paper are likely to women higher due to the sharp fall in the pepper crop in the country and the higher exports this year.

Though there is an increase in the production in other countries, the tight Indian supplies is likely to keep prices on a higher plateau for some more weeks ,according to market sources.

The production stood at 85,000 tonnes last year. In the current year , it is likely to fall to 60,000-65,000 tonnes per year.

According to market sources the production has come down to the level of 65,000 tonnes achieved two years back.

In production the exports from the country has touched a level which is higher than last year.

The quantity of exports during the period of April to February 1999-2000 touched a level of 38,000 tonnes as compared to 29,475 tonnes during the same period of the previous year. The value of exports also registered an increase to Rs.761.17 crore during the current year as against Rs 539.49 crore in the last year. The sources pointed out that prices started picking a in the Kochi market by mid March as arrival s in the domestic market slowed down. Domestic supplies are tight as 38,000 tonnes of paper has already been exported from the country.
