Market trends of
frozen chicken
The Indian
poultry industry can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Following representations from
segments of the industry in Pune, Hyderabad and Banglore over the last few days, imports
of frozen chicken and/or or parts only be allowed from other Saarc member countries.
So
apprehensions of Tyson or Perdue frozen chicken ruling the roost in the Indian market can
now be put in cold storage for at least a year.
The Indian
market is much too big for the Likes of Tyson and Perdue( number one and three in the US
poultry industry, respectively, with annual turnover of almost $15 bn and three billion
dollars) to stay out of.
The Indian
poultry should graduate from the level of plentiful production to value enhanced
processing and marketing. The fact is that with very high margins initially available,
production of broilers has reached such a glut that hatcheries in Hyderabad had to
recently dump 20 lakh eggs two weeks in a row.
Karanataka
reduced the sales tax on chicken packed on a container to four percent from the earlier
level of 12 per cent applicable for food items in general. |
