Onion export

Govt. would allow immediate onion exports in the wake of a glut in the market. The farmers were facing immense hardships as the onion was selling cheaply in the market.

Local market are immensely facing the problem and suffering a loss of Rs. 65 crore as it is force to sell and auction onions at throw away prices. However, sources said the state would have been able to minimise the losses substantially even after purchasing the onions at Rs. 350. Though marketing federation was initially confident of storing most of the stock, a dispute over issuing tenders delayed the purchase of gunnybags for storing and transporting the onions to the various government godowns across the state. The govt. has anticipated the excess production of onions and made for storage provisions and proper marketing.

The Center govt. has now announced that it would "soon" allow the export of lakh quintals have rotted in Nashik and an equal number may rot in Pune. Hence govt. assured the onion farmers of Pune and Nasik about onion export.
