Rice bran oil output dropped down
The major
states of producing rice bran oil are Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Besides
this, some production of rice bran oil also takes place in other states like Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka etc.
The
production trend in the year of 1998-99 stated that it was around 5 lakh tonnes. During
the current oil year, production is expected to be much lower and is pegged around four
and half lakh tonnes.
Most of
the edible rice bran oil produced in India is consumed by the vanaspati makers in the
country. During the oil year 97-98, the consumption of edible rice bran oil by this
sector amounted for about 30% of the total edible rice bran oil produced in the country.
In 98-99 also the consumption by vanaspati makers remained around the same level.
The remaining edible rice bran oil bran oil is sold in the retail market.
Consumption
of edible rice bran oil is popular in parts of east India like West Bengal, parts of
Bihar, Orissa and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Refinery loss in producing edible rice bran oil
is as high as Rs. 60-65/10 kg of oil produced compared to Rs. 35-40/10 kg incurred while
producing sunflower oil. Extraction rate in producing rice bran oil is around a maximum of
17-18 % compared to over 35% in case of other oilseeds notably sunflower and groundnut.
The extraction rate is another disincentive for producing more rice bran oil. |
