Step to boost export of non - basmati

Haryana rice industry has proposed that union govt. should create a separate category for long grain aromatic rice and should made levy free. Currently basmati and other varieties similar to basmati are being sold within the range of $375-750/tonns; reported by the Haryana rice industry.

Raw basmati is being sold above$600/tonne while parboiled basmati is ruling at around $500/tonne. Interestingly, the Union commerce ministry has already expressed its willingness to create a separate category for long-grain aromatic varieties in the new product standards being created for rice, the food ministry remains unconvinced that exempting them from the levy system would lead to a negligible drop in the buffer stocks but greatly improve the average price realisation for farmers.
