Tea exports sink by 22% as demand fall

According to Union commerce ministry’s figures made available in Calcutta, the centre of the Indian tea industry, exports plunged to Rs. 1,766 crop in ‘99-00 from Rs.2,265 crore in the previous year, a drop of 22%.

The total exports during the year come down by 12.6% to 183.8 million kg against 210.4 million kg the previous year. The decline in exports was expected in view of the shortfall in production due to a drought in northern India during the first four months. Production stood at 805.6 million kg in ’99, down from 870 million kg the previous year as reported.

Exports dipped the most in March ’00, down by 46.1 % at Rs. 175 crore notched up in March,’99. Total volume during the month registered a decline of 37.9% at 10.7 million kg. Last year’s March production was 17.3 million-kg.

However, the export scenario is expected to look up this year. According to estimates provided by the Tea Board the country’s production stood at 142.9 million kg between January and April,’00.
