Wheat exports

Boosting exports is one of the major thrust of our government to take the advantage of the global economic liberalization. In the case of wheat, the country is fortunately now second largest producer of this commodity in the world after China.

The global trade has scope in both durum and aestivum wheats. The durum account for only 4% of the total world production. Nearly 10-12 Mt of durum, valued around only 4% of the total world production. Nearly 10-12 Mt of durum, values around US $ 2600 million is traded annually. India is one of the major durum producers and almost all the 2.5 Mt of durum produced is consumed in the domestic market. But now since foreign export price for durum is attractive, an organized effort to export durum wheat is called for and could be taken up.

In the past, we have donated wheat in a limited manner to many of the friendly nations such as Bhutan, Jordan, Vietnam, DPR Korea etc. However, so far we have not attained the status of the regular wheat-exporting nation. It is primarily because to stay in the international wheat trade, a country is supposed to honour the contract agreement and cannot slip back from the memorandum of understanding signed among countries involved in the trade.
