TERI scientists develop better mustard variety After a decade of research, TERI has developed a new variety of rapeseed mustard which it claims more nutritious and produces oil that helps to reduce cholesterol. Called TERI Uttam, the new variety of Brassica Napus(Gobhi-Sarson) has a better fatty acid profile than the existing varieties growing in Indian fields. Modern Biotechnological tools in tissue culture, chromatographical selection for high quality have been employed to derive this sizzling line which is now on offer for commercialization. (Website : www.economictimes.com) B'lore co develops high-yield tomato for south markets Bangalore based Indo American Hybrid seeds, leaders in production and marketing of hybrid seeds in vegetable and flowers, have gone in for large scale commercialization of a tomato variety developed specially for the southern market. Named Ruchi, the plants produces sour fruits that are preferred in the south. "These fruits have a prominent green shoulder and appear very much like the locally to as 'naati' or 'desi' but unlike the local varieties they have good keeping quality," says Arthur Santosh Attavar, director, marketing and product management, IAHS. As there had been little change in the domestic price of soyameal in the past two months, the consequential stability in Indian fob (free-on-board) prices of soyameal, ruling at $194-195 per tonne, in January this year over the previous month. Courtesy: The Economic Times, February 08, 2003(Website : www.economictimes.com) ICAR clears 37 high-yielding varieties Thirty-seven high yielding varieties of crops, including wheat, pulses and oilseeds, developed by the state agriculture universities and other agencies, have been released for commercial cultivation. Their release was made following the recommendation by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at the 37th meeting of its central sub-committee which also approved 27 state-released varieties for notification, an ICAR release said on Monday. The new varieties released include Shivalik (HS-420) for wheat, Himadri (BHS 352) for barley, CSV-17 for sorghum and GHB 526 for bajra. ICAR has also released desi cotton hybrid, Swadeshi-1 (ADCHI) suitable for rain-fed areas of central zone and a hirsutum hybrid, NCHH 207, suitable for irrigated areas of south zone for commercial cultivation. Former agriculture minister VV Raghavan, MP, released on Monday the new varieties which have been developed at Madakkathara cashew research station of the university. He said indiscriminate use of pesticides and fungicides had caused irreparable damage to environment. Courtesy: The Economic Times, December 24, 2002(Website : www.economictimes.com) Wheat MSP may stay at Rs 620/quintal The Commission on Agricultural cost and Prices (CACP) has suggested a Rs 10 per quintal drought relief while recommending that the MSP for wheat be retained at last year's level of Rs 620 per quintal. "Based on a reference made by the agriculture ministry, CACP has reiterated that the wheat MSP be frozen at last year's level but due to drought this year it has also recommended a Rs 10 per quintal drought relief for wheat," official sources said, adding, the recommendation will now be forwarded to the cabinet which will take a final decision.
