Karnataka State Government had plans to promote biotechnology in agriculture. The Government had constituted an Agriculture Commission headed by the former Vice-Chancellor of University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS) for this purpose. The main concern of the Government was to increase the yield of agriculture crops. To give a fillip to research and development in bio-technology, the Government had decided to set up an ultra-modern bio-technology laboratory near Bangalore.The plan reports that as there was good scope for private parties to set up cold storage units in Gulbarga, Agro-and-food-processing units and cold storages would be set up in the State.To attract private participation in establishing cold storage facilities, the Government had decided to reduce the power tariff by Re.one. Food-processing units should also be set up in the district to encourage horticulture, The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) had provided funds to set up a terminal market on the outskirts of Bangalore, as reported. |
