Electric treatment : pre-treatment of legume crops

A new treatment for pre-treatment of legume seeds has been innovated recently. The department of Botany from Bharatiyar University conducted the experiment. Platinum wires were made to run beneath a tank between glass slabs. Adding water to plant completely the circuit. About 100 seeds were pre-soaked in water for 24 hours to soften the cells. They were placed in the tank containing water. The cathode and anode were than connected. 240v alternate current were converted to 27v direct current and the final treatment was 10m Amp current for one hour.

The seeds were then removed and tested for germination in soil. A control of non- treated seeds was placed simultaneously. The results found were interesting as the electrically treated seeds showed 100 per cent germination. Further the amount growth was 3 times as much as the control was. When tested for disease resistance, the treated showed higher resistance. Such treatments are expected to improve the efficiency of the seeds and thus increase production too.
