Scientists at IIHR, Bangalore have developed a new hybrid papaya variety called "Surya". It provides medium sized fruits weighing on an average 600-800 grams each and the fruits are said to be sweet with good shelf life. This variety is said to address the long felt need of papaya growers to have small sized fruits with high yields. Surya hybrid is said to yield 48-58 tonnes per acre. The fruits may be harvested 9-10 months of transplanting. On an average plant provides 48-58 kg fruits owing to small sized fruits with good keeping quality. Surya is considered is ideal for distant markets. |
