New Gasifier System For Cardamom Drying

Indo-Swiss Project Sikkim (ISPS) at TERI,has developed a simple updraft wood gasifier system for cardamom drying,, which has several advantages over the traditional Bhattis .This system is based on used oil barrels and fitted to existing bhattis. The gasifier allows more efficient use of the fuelwood’s energy content and more even, controllable heat. It also minimizes the cardamoms’ exposure to smoke.

The new gasifier was successfully field tested by 15 growers in harvest season, with minimal training. ISPS reckons that if all the cardamom growers in Sikkim would be persuaded to convert their bhattis, 12,000 tonnes of fuelwood could be saved each year.

From the growers’ point of view, the better quality end product form the new system promises increased profits. Cardamoms dried in gasifier bhattis keep their red colour and far more of their volatile oils. They were market tested in the major trading centres of Delhi, Amritsar, Kanpur and Lucknow with good results.
