New packaging material : Tyvek

Dupont, New Delhi, has introduced a unique product for packaging agro products called Tyvek. It is a tough durable sheet that is stronger than paper and less expensive and more versatile than fabric. It is made from high density polyethylene fibres and offers a balance of physical characteristics of paper, film and cloth. This makes the product strong, lightweight, flexible, smooth, low-linting and opaque. It is resistant to water, chemicals, abrasion and aging. This unique combination of properties makes Tyvek ideal for a broad range of applications in packaging agro products such has basmati rice, seeds, pulses, flour, bulk tea bags and so on.

The bags made from Tyvek enables the contents to be in a cleaner state and preserves the nutritive value of grain better than when packed in only conventional packing materials. Excellent printability ensures good aesthetics which enable better branding of products on super market shelves. Bags from Tyvek can be made either by pasting, stitching or laminating either to itself or to any other product if required.

Tyvek also finds application in manufacture of seed bags, labels for crops, nurseries and bags that are used in harsh environments. In some areas of the world such as Japan and Thailand Tyvek is also used for mulch cultivation.
