Russia, locked in a dispute with US over the safety of poultry imports, is considering raising tariffs on imported poultry by a third, a government official said. As talks proceeded on the drafting of a new veterinary certificate demanded by Russia for imports from next month, US exporters announced a suspension of shipments to the country. Alexander Filippov, a senior tariff policy department official at the Economic Development and Trade Ministry, said the ministry was considering raising the existing 25% tariff on poultry imports by 8.3%, but no less than by 0.067 euros per kg. In order to save egg market from sudden decline in egg prices, the Commissionerate of Animal Husbandry had asked the National Agricultural Marketing Federation (NAFED) to introduce the `Market Intervention Scheme’ in market. It is reported that the onset of summer has led to less demand for eggs and egg products in the market. And with more produce, the prices of eggs have fallen. More than eight lakh eggs have been destroyed, in Pune, Nasik and many adjoining areas in the northern region due to lack of demand. Sudden fall in prices had hit the producers and they are getting less than what they spent for producing the eggs. National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) is a registered body of private egg producers which fixes the prices of the eggs. Hence Government is not intervening in fixing the egg prices, reported by Press Agency. |
