Tissue culture banana cultivation

An experimental farm in Bangalore holds the world record for T C banana plantlet density of 6,900 plants /hectare.  The TC banana plantlets give very higher yields compared to sucker based plants of the same variety.  Micro-propagated (tissue-cultured) banana plantlets offer certain advantages:

1.

Uniform, pest and disease free, fresh, and healthy planting material.

2.

Healthy plant growth, early flowering and early harvest with very high yields.

3.

Synchronous flowering, fruiting, and harvesting–making marketing and planting easier.

4.

Broader, larger and healthy leaves, bigger bananas, more hands in each bunch, more fingers (fruits) per bunch and bigger as well as uniform fingers, resulting in very high yields and quality, as well as uniformity, delicious fruits and enhanced flavour & aroma fetching better prices and unprecedented revenues and net profits.

5.

Saving of time and inputs and early recovery of investment & cultivation costs, with unprecedented net profits.

6.

Resources can be multiplied in quick succession.

7.

Tissue Cultured plants respond well to both drip irrigation and conventional channel & bund irrigation.

Plantlets should be disease free when dispatched from the green house attached to the laboratory and from the TC secondary nurseries, and can be maintained disease-free with proper crop management in the farm.  The elite genetic and potential vigour of the plantlets enables earlier crop maturity (gain of up to 3-4 months) compared to the conventional sucker based crop of the same variety.
