Ceiling on land holdings

If one looks to the distribution of land holdings in India (vide Agricultural Census Reports) one can notice a clear picture of ill-distribution or inequality in land distribution leads to inequality in the incomes. Small land holders who are very large in number possess very small in number possess a very large proportion of land. In order to reduce this disparity, the ceiling on land holdings was proposed. Acts were passed by different states in around 1961. The ceiling limits proposed vary from state to state. In 1972, the Central Land Reforms Committee suggested some modifications in these Acts. Accordingly, many states brought down the ceiling limits and also defined the family unit.
