'Quicken ' an interspecies hybrid between Nicobari fowl and Japanese quail Produced
Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) is a recent introduction in Andaman and Nicobar islands. The bird being small, hardy and known for delicious meat and eggs having medicinal value was brought for feasibility studies in the hot and humid conditions of Andaman and Nicobar islands. Scientists of Division of Animal Science achieved a remarkable breakthrough in creating an interspecies hybrid between Nicobari fowl and Japanese quail named as 'Quicken'. Dr A. Kundu and associates have produced interspecies hybrid. For detailed study of this interspecies hybrid and their potential in poultry production a large-scale production of Quicken has been initiated. It may have immense possibilities in terms of higher growth rate and egg production, which may be exploited for higher commercial gains by the farmers.
Behind this breakthrough is the constant encouragement and inspiration of the driving force Dr S.P.S.hlawat, Director CARI, Port Blair. The inter species hybrid has great scientific importance in the field of genetics and may have commercial applications as well. For further details please contact:
