The total area under grapes in Maharashtra is over 20,000 hectares and production exceeds 300,000 tonnes, productivity averaging 15 tonnes per hectare. One of the largest exporters of fresh grapes mainly seedless grapes from India. In keeping with the international trend of fruit growers becoming exporters, the vineyard owners of Maharashtra entered international markets with their own brand ‘Mahagrapes’. The grape growers in areas such as Pune, Nasik, Solapur, Latur, Sangli have formed 18 co-operative societies with almost 2000 farmers. All the member co-operatives are partners of Mahagrapes. With the guidance of the Maharashtra State Grape Growers’ Association, Mahagrapes started exporting grapes to the Middle east and Europe in 1991. Mahagrapes in the initial phase of development has been guided well by institutions like NCDC, APEDA and NHB at New Delhi.
