Muga

Antherea assama produce golden yellow silk. This process is found only in the Brahmaputra Valley of India. It is semidomescticated. The worms, which crawl down at the end of their larval period, are collected by the rearers. They are allowed to spin cocoons in the rears’ houses. The worms are raised on Machilus bombycina and Litsaea polyantha trees. At the end of the larval period, when the worms are ready to spin the cocoons, they crawl down the tree in search of suitable place for the construction of cocoons. Such worms are collected and are allowed to spin the cocoons in ‘jali’ made of dried twigs. The cocoon has a very weak peduncle and is golden yellow. The cocoons are boiled in soap and soda solution and are reeled.
