KDA Offers Focus on Food Safety Seminars

The Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety and lodging program has partnered with the K-State Confucius Institute to offer two Focus on Food Safety seminars in Mandarin Chinese. The first seminar will be held at the KDA office in Manhattan, 1320 Research Park Dr., on August 27 from 2:00–3:30 p.m. The second seminar will be held at Bo Lings Products, 9000 Bond St., Overland Park, on August 29 from 2:00–3:30 p.m.

Focus on Food Safety seminars are designed to help food service workers focus on those items that are critical to safely preparing, cooking, holding and storing food. The voluntary course is designed to help identify basic steps to help prevent foodborne illness. The seminar is designed for those who work as food service workers at a restaurant, deli or fast food establishment; community meal providers; members of a church group that serves food; daycare providers; participants in fundraisers that serve food; or for any individual who wants to improve his or her safe food handling techniques.

KDA-FSL provides many food safety educational materials for consumers, food workers, and the food industry as part of their mission to help ensure a safe food supply, promote public health and safety, and provide consumer protection. Language barriers can inhibit compliance with the Kansas Food Code, and inspectors have needed additional training tools to help overcome these language barriers. In addition to the Focus on Food Safety seminars, KDA-FSL has recently translated 46 food safety fact sheets into Chinese and has helped to provide Chinese culinary classes, with an emphasis on food safety.

There is no cost to attend the Focus on Food Safety seminars, but RSVP is requested to ensure adequate space and materials: 785-564-6767 or kda.fsl@ks.gov. For more information about the seminars or to find the food safety fact sheets, along with a variety of other food safety educational materials, go to agriculture.ks.gov/FSLeducation.
